How to get home to Labrador
You can come home by...
Road
You can drive to Labrador via route 389/500 starting at Baie Comeau Quebec (Via 389), traveling north east to Route 500 (we call it the Trans Labrador Highway) to Labrador City and Wabush and then east past Churchill Falls towards Goose Bay and North West River.
BE AWARE that this is mainly a gravel road, not paved, so please drive carefully.
You can also drive from the island of Newfoundland leaving from the northern penninsula at St. Barbe, crossing the Strait of Belle Isle on the ferry, the Appollo, porting at Blanc Sablon Quebec - then you can drive the scenic Labrador Coastal Drive and visit all of the communities in the Labrador Straits and south coast as far as Cartwright. The first half of this drive is paved. The ferry service traditionally discontinues in January and resumes in April. For information on the

THE ROAD IS NOW OPEN
The new road link is now open between Goose Bay and Cartwright, on the Atlantic seaboard. Travellers can continue their road trips directly to the Labrador Straits for the ferry crossing of the Strait of Belle Isle from Blanc Sablon, Quebec between May and January. Starting February 1, the Sir Robert Bond will operate two round trips per week between CornerBrook and Blanc Sablon.

When there is severe weather, portions of this road may be closed to ensure your safety. Please calll for Winter Road conditions and information ph 709-896-7888
SAFETY NEWS - There is NO cell phone service on this long route, but the Provincial Government has a program in place for you to "borrow" a satellite phone for use between Labrador City and Goose Bay and Port Hope Simpson. There is NO FEE for this service. Pick up and drop off points at the hotels in each town. For residents of Newfoundland you must provide a drivers licence or credit card. For non- residents, you must provide a credit card. The phones are only for emergency use and are programmed to enable direct calls to the police.
Satellite phones can now be picked up at the following participating hotels:
Wabush Hotel in Wabush;
Midway Travel Inn in Churchill Falls;
Hotel North Two and Royal Inn and Suites in Happy Valley-Goose Bay; and,
Alexis Hotel in Port Hope Simpson.

You can visit western Labrador by air with daily flights stopping at Wabush Airport (YWK)on Provincial Airlines from St. John's, Deer Lake (via Goose Bay) or Montreal and Sept Isle. Car rentals and taxi services are available.
You can visit Central Labrador by air, with daily flights stopping at Goose Bay Airport (YYR) via Provincial Airlines St. John's, Deer Lake, or Montreal, or Air Canada from Halifax. Car rentals and taxi services are available.
You can visit the Straits of Labrador by air, landing at Blanc Sablon, Quebec. Car rentals are available.
Once you are here, Air Labrador and Provincial Airlines fly around Labrador to the communities on the north coast and some in the south.

Sea
In the summers of 2010, you will still have two ferry options. You will be able to drive your vehicle to Lewisporte, Newfoundland, board the ferry MV Sir Robert Bond
and sail for 36 hours on to Goose Bay to connect with Highway 500. OR you can drive north to St. Barbe, Newfoundland, board the 2 hour MV Apollo ferry crossing to Blanc Sablon, Quebec, then drive along the scenic Labrador Coastal route as far as Cartwright, visiting all the coastal communities along the way. There you can board the "Sir Robert Bond" for a 12 hour sail across Lake Melville to Goose Bay and then drive onto Labrador West. The "Bond" ferry service may be discontinued in 2011 - we'll keep you updated.
The MV Northern Ranger offers passage to the north coast communities from Goose Bay and Cartwright, on a regular weekly schedule.
